About

I’ve wanted to create a chunky cowl with bobbles for a while and I thought now was a great time to give it a shot, since it’s finally starting to feel like winter over here in Winnipeg. I love working with white/cream yarn because I think it photographs so beautifully and gives the best winter vibes. I actually ordered this yarn for a sweater design in my upcoming book  (in case you didn’t know, I’m writing a book on 20 crochet sweaters that comes out fall 2021 that you can pre-order here!) and had leftovers that I thought would work perfectly for a bulky, textured cowl! I wouldn’t recommend using a variegated yarn since the texture won’t pop as much as it does on a solid colour, but you do you!

The Wolseley Cowl is a chunky, textured cowl featuring alternating rows of bobbles for a fun, evenly-distributed, all-over texture. Intended to be a statement piece for any fall wardrobe, this design is equal parts chic and eccentric. Wear it over your favourite fall outfit for a whimsical pop or tuck it inside your winter coat for maximum warmth.

The bobble rows are crocheted with the wrong-side facing you as you work them; you’ll love watching the bobbles pop out on the right-side of your work! With a simple 4-row repeat, you’ll memorize this pattern in no time. This fun stitch pattern combined with a chunky yarn makes for a quick design that you can whip out in one sitting. This pattern is great for selling at craft shows or giving as gifts!

You can use any bulky weight (category 5) or super bulky weight (category 6) yarn to create your own Wolseley Cowl! For a different look, try using a lighter yarn weight and modifying the foundation chain by working any multiple of 6 until reaching your desired circumference!

Materials

Yarn: Bulky —WeCrochet Biggo in Bare

  • 50% Superwash Merino, 50% Nylon
  • 110 yds [91 m] per 3.5-oz [100-g] skein
  • Find this yarn on crochet.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes.
  • Bare is the natural, undyed colourway. Biggo also comes in 18 other beautifully dyed colourways.
  • Ball Winder + Swift
    • Biggo comes in hanks, which means you will need to wind them into balls or cakes before using. You can do this by hand, but it’s much easier
(and quicker) with a winder + swift!

Yarn Substitution Notes: Substitute WeCrochet Biggo with any similar, bulky weight yarn. Most fibers should work fine in place of Biggo.

A note on yarn weight: You can also choose a totally different yarn weight altogether by working a beginning foundation chain in any multiple of 6 until reaching your desired circumference, and then following the pattern as written.

Yardage: 3 hanks of Biggo or 242 yds (222 m) of a similar bulky weight yarn.

Hook: Size U.S. K/10½  (6.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle

Gauge

4 x 4″ [10 x 10 cm] = 9.5 sts and 9 rows in Half Double Crochet

Measurements

Finished cowl measures approximately 30” [76 cm] in circumference and 8.5” [22 cm] tall

You can adjust the height by working as many or as few rows as you like. You can adjust the width by adding or subtracting stitches in multiples of 6 from the foundation chain.

Notes

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row. If only one number is provided, it applies to all sizes.

Bobbles: As you work the bobble rows, the wrong side of your work will be facing you. The half double crochet stitch worked immediately after the bobble is what makes the bobble pop out of your work.

Adjusting Foundation Chain: To adjust the circumference, work a foundation chain with a multiple of 6 stitches, then follow the pattern as written. Pattern will work in any yarn weight.

Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch.

Construction: This cowl is worked in joined, turned rounds from the bottom-up with no seaming involved. By working a simple 4-row repeat, you will create a textured fabric with bobbles that appear on the right side of your work. Each bobble row alternates the bobble placement to keep them evenly spaced.

Abbreviations

ch: chain

fhdc: foundation half double crochet

hdc: half double crochet

rep: repeat

rnd: round

sl st: slip stitch

st(s): stitch(es)

Special Stitch – bobble:

  • [Yarn over, insert hook into designated stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop, yarn over and pull through 2 loops] 5 times, yarn over and pull through all 6 loops on your hook.

Note: As you work this stitch, the wrong side will be facing you. Once you work the next stitch after your bobble you will begin to see the bobble pop out the back of your work.
