About

This month, I wanted to bring you a really basic accessory pattern that you could wear with almost any outfit. Personally, I love to find the perfect jackets and coats, and then pair them with basic scarves or cowls that enhance the outfit, not take away from it. I like beautifully simple accessories. Last winter, I made myself a plain ribbed cowl that was a tube with a few increases in it to make room for the shoulders and I finally decided to share that extremely easy pattern with the world (fo’ free)!

Materials

  • 2 hanks of Swish Bulky
    • 100% Fine Superwash Merino Wool
    • (I used 240yds or 1.75 hanks)
  • 6.5 mm crochet hook (K 10 1/2)
  • Tapestry needle
  • Blocking mats and T-pins if desired

Abbreviations

ch: chain

FSC: Foundation single crochet

  • For help with FSC, see this tutorial.
  • You can also: Chain 77, sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across to end of row – in place of FSC.

rep: repeat

rnd: round

sc: single crochet

scBLO: Sc in the back loop only

sk: skip

sl st: slip stitch

st(s): stitch(es)

Measurements

Cowl measures approx. 10″ tall; 27″ at narrow opening (first round), 30″ at wider opening (last round).

Gauge

4″= approx. 11 sts x 14 rows in single crochet worked in the back loops only; worked flat

Construction

This cowl starts off with a foundation chain, then works in the back loops for the entirety of the piece. There are a few increase rounds peppered throughout to allow the top of the cowl near your face to be tighter while the opposite side is wider to accommodate the shoulders. Feel free to adjust the pattern to suit your specific needs. You can begin with any length foundation chain, and work as many or as few increase rounds as you like. You can also add as many non-increase rounds as you want, wherever you want, in order to add length to this cowl.

Pattern

Rnd 1: FSC 76, sl st to join rnd, being careful not to twist your sts, turn. [76 sts]

Rnd 2-19: Ch 1, scBLO in each st to end of rnd, sl st to join, turn.

Rnd 20: Ch 1, scBLO in next 9 sts, 2 scBLO in next st, *scBLO in next 18 sts, 2 scBLO in next st; rep from * 2 more times, scBLO to end of rnd, sl st to join, turn. [80 sts]

Rnd 21-24: Ch 1, scBLO in each st to end of rnd, sl st to join, turn.

Rnd 25: Ch 1, scBLO in next 10 sts, 2 scBLO in next st, *scBLO in next 19 sts, 2 scBLO in next st; rep from * 2 more times, scBLO to end of rnd, sl st to join, turn. [84 sts]

I love your patterns, so thank you for this one! I have a question, though. To have 76 sc stitches at the end of Rnd 1, shouldn’t I FSC 76? I admit I get the count of foundation chains confused sometimes, so apologize if this is a dumb question.
