In this post I’ll be reviewing a brand new-to-me yarn called “Unicorn Solid” from Hobbii! This is my first time every trying a Hobbii yarn!
Hobbii reached out to me to test out a few of their yarns and I was so excited about this for a couple of reasons:
1) I love to find a brand new yarn company I’ve never tried before, and
2) I’ve seen my maker friends posting about Hobbii all over Instagram recently and when I looked into this company, I couldn’t believe how many new, gorgeous yarns they had in their line-up!
Let me show you the first one I tried out – Hobbii Unicorn Solid!
Fiber Friday
What is Fiber Friday? Every Friday I’m gonna share with you one new yarn that I’m absolutely loving, including allllll the info – the yarn specs, what I would make with it, what I’d use it for, why it’s great for certain types of projects, and what patterns I’ve found that use this yarn including my own patterns and patterns from others! It’s fun to really focus on one specific yarn and explore all the projects people have been making with it. This is one way that I find new patterns, new designers and new designs that I love and can add to my Ravelry queue to make when I have time to start a new project!
Quick back story on why I’m doing this: When I started knitting and crocheting, I basically used Lion Brand Thick and Quick yarn exclusively. I’m sure you’ve tried it before.. It’s the best. It’s a fun, high quality department store chunky yarn that is easily available and inexpensive – perfect for beginners or those who love those quick gratification projects. If you’re learning to knit or crochet, I would 1000% recommend learning with this yarn! In the last 3 years, I have knit more hats made with Thick and Quick than I can count, and I think now it’s time to venture into new territory and explore some thinner yarns.. and I thought it would be fun to do it together!
Hobbii – Unicorn Solid
Before we discuss this yarn, shall we talk about Hobbii? From my perspective, this brand seemed to just appear out of nowhere, and now I’m suddenly seeing them everywhere. I first discovered them a few months back when what seemed like everybody on Instagram participated in the #NoShadesOfGrey Challenge – a Hobbii campaign challenging makers to show off their colourful projects.
Hobbii is an online yarn company from Denmark (yes, that’s right!) – which is another reason I assumed this yarn wasn’t targeted to me. I assumed that since this company is on the other side of the world, they wouldn’t ship to North America or mainly marketed to Europeans, and boy was I wrong! They have been working hard with the North American collabs and are becoming more and more popular among Canadians and Americans, and even offer FREE shipping over $75. (Even if your order is under $74, shipping is only $7.50 USD.) This is cheaper than some North American companies and I don’t know how they do it, but it’s a HUGE bonus. They ship the next day and guarantee delivery between 2-15 days. I know that shipping is a huge headache when you need yarn in a pinch, and this is one of my favourite things about Hobbii! Such a great perk.
Okay, now the yarn! So, Unicorn Solid feels like (and looks like) a really luxurious, expensive yarn. It’s bouncy, it’s incredibly soft, and it’s got amazing drape. This feels like a special yarn that requires a special project.
Unicorn Solid is actually a spin-off of one of Hobbii’s prettiest, coolest yarns (in my opinion) called Unicorn. As I’m writing this (June 2021), it’s currently sold out of all colourways unfortunately.. It seems to be one of their more popular products – and as soon as you look at the colourways, you’ll understand why! Once it’s re-stocked, you can bet I’m going to do my best to get my hands on some of that because those colours are truly STUNNING. Check out Hobbii Unicorn to see for yourself.
Hobbii Unicorn Solid is the solid coloured sister yarn to the regular Unicorn line. They use the same dye colours to create both lines. I chose 7 colourways to experiment with, and ended up ordering Lavender, Sea Foam, Cream, Green Tea, Powder Pastel, Light Blue, and Mustard. They are all such gorgeous colours that have the perfect balance between muted and bold colours. They’re saturated, yet soft. I love every single colorway that I ordered, which I am actually so surprised about!

Patterns
Usually in this section of the yarn review, I’ll share patterns that I find on Ravelry that use the specific yarn that we’re exploring, but Hobbii actually has a few free patterns listed on the yarn page so you can get some ideas as you’re shopping (I love when yarn companies do this!) and apparently more patterns are being added soon! I’m going to link the patterns here. There’s a pair of socks, three shawls, and a really beautiful raglan pullover (some knit, some crochet).

My Thoughts
To be honest, my first thought was how much I love the chic, black label. To allow the colours to be presented in the best light, the label has to be either black or white in my opinion, and most labels are white. I love this detail that makes Unicorn Solid seem like a really sophisticated, high-end yarn with a mid-range price point.
About the yarn itself – it’s soft, has great drape, great bounce and memory which I love, and I really do recommend trying it out. My only complaint is that it pilled slightly as I was handling it for photography and beginning to knit and crochet with it, but not enough to turn me off of using this yarn for a special project.
I usually read the reviews on the yarn website before ordering, and the reviews under this yarn are all 5-star reviews with nothing but glowing recommendations.
The fact that Hobbii has free shipping over $75, next-day shipping, 2-15 day delivery, and the fact that they bundle their yarn prices (so that the more you buy, the cheaper it is) is really helpful for larger-scale projects like sweaters or blankets, and this is something you don’t really see with mainstream yarn companies. All of these details make Hobbii a company that I would 10000% buy from in the future and I’m so happy to partner with them to share new yarns with all of you!
