Who is Hobbii?

Before we discuss this particular yarn, shall we introduce Hobbii? From my perspective, this brand seemed to just appear out of nowhere, and now I’m seeing them all over the place. I first discovered them in 2020 when what seemed like everybody on Instagram participated in the #NoShadesOfGrey Challenge – a Hobbii campaign challenging makers to show off their colourful projects.

Hobbii is an online yarn company from Copenhagen, Denmark. On the other side of the world, yes; but don’t write them off just yet! They have been working hard to spread the word to us North Americans, becoming more and more popular among Canadians and Americans. We even get FREE shipping over $75. (Even if your order is under $74, shipping is only $7.50 USD.) This is cheaper than most North American companies I usually order from, and I don’t know how they do it, but it’s a HUGE bonus. They ship the next day and guarantee delivery between 2-15 days. Shipping costs and turnaround times can be so annoying when you need yarn in a pinch (especially when ordering from Canada), so I especially appreciate this detail. Besides the vast amount of quality yarn options, it’s one of my favourite things about Hobbii and one of the reasons I keep coming back to them.

What is the “Friends” Collection?

If you scroll through Hobbii’s website, you may notice that many of the yarns are part of a line called Friends, labelled as such because the color numbers are correlated between all yarns within this collection. For example, if you compare Color number 10 in two different yarns, Friends Cotton and Friends Kid Silk, the colorway is called Cappucino in both. The colorways within each yarn line correlate with one another for easy mixing and matching of fibers if that’s something you’re into! Not only can you match a mohair with a merino to hold double, but you can create a mohair sweater and a merino beanie that match in color but differ in fiber. I haven’t seen many companies who offer a collection of yarns like this!

There are 12 different yarns and a variety of fiber contents within this Friends collection, and there are also variety packs you can order to get a taste of multiple colourways.

A Closer Look at Hobbii: Friends Wheel

Hobbii was gracious enough to let me experiment with a new-to-me yarn, Hobbii Friends Wheel!

This is not my first time trying Hobbii’s yarns; I’ve been lucky to have worked with them in the past and I also place my own orders regularly! This is, however, my first time trying this specific yarn, and I really enjoyed it.

Here are some quick yarn stats:

  • Fiber Content: 55% Cotton, 45% Acrylic
  • 100g (3.5 oz) per cake
  • 400 m (436 yds) per cake
  • Put-Up: Cake
  • Weight: Fine (Fingering)
  • Recommended needles: 3 mm (US 2) – 3.5 mm (US 4)
  • Recommended hook: 4 mm (US 6) – 4.5 mm (US 7)
  • Machine wash 40°C (104°F) / Do not tumble dry / Dry flat
  • Comes with Easy Pull Tab for easy center-pull (no accidental yarn barf)!

I crocheted with it and I knit with it. Here’s a granny square I made as soon as I received my yarn!

I used a 3.5 mm hook, but you could definitely use a smaller or larger hook depending on the look you’re going for.

This yarn is created from 4 threads that are spun together (4 ply). It’s spun tightly so that you will not have any splitting of plies while you’re knitting or crocheting, which is always a treat! It’s a smooth, durable yarn created from 55% cotton and 45% acrylic.

Easy Pull Tab

Have you ever struggled to find the center-pull on a skein of yarn and accidentally pulled out a big mess of ramen noodle yarn that takes forever to untangle? ME TOO, IT’S THE WORST. Sometimes I knot it so badly that I end up having to cut the mess out and start again.

Not with this yarn, though! Each cake has an easy-start pull tab for a smoother knitting/crocheting experience. I love these because it means you don’t have to go searching for the center-pull! (Why don’t more companies have these?!) It will be right there on the outside, easy to access.

Friends Wheel – Color Options

There are a TON of colorways to choose from – they didn’t all fit in this screenshot!

There is also a “Friends Wheel Multi” line that looks like this!
