In this post I’ll be reviewing Woodland Tweed (bare) by WeCrochet (the sister company to Knit Picks!)

I am using this yarn for my Rosebud Raglan CAL! It begins September 13th, and we will crochet the same sweater together! Whether it’s your first sweater or your hundredth sweater, let’s do this together! Click here to join the CAL 🙂

Fiber Friday

What is Fiber Friday? Every Friday I’m gonna share with you one new yarn that I’m absolutely loving, including allllll the info – the yarn specs, what I would make with it, what I’d use it for, why it’s great for certain types of projects, and what patterns I’ve found that use this yarn (including my own patterns and patterns from others)! It’s fun to really focus on one specific yarn and explore all the projects that have been created with it. This is one way to find new patterns and new designers that you love and add to your Ravelry queue to make when you have time to start a new project!

Quick back story on why I’m doing this: When I started knitting and crocheting, I basically used Lion Brand Thick and Quick yarn exclusively. I’m sure you’ve tried it before.. It’s the best. It’s a fun, high quality department store chunky yarn that is easily available and inexpensive – perfect for beginners or those who love those quick gratification projects. If you’re learning to knit or crochet, I would 1000% recommend learning with this yarn! In the last 3 years, I have knit more hats made with Thick and Quick than I can count, and I think now it’s time to venture into new territory and explore some thinner yarns.. and I thought it would be fun to do it together!

WeCrochet Woodland Tweed

As soon as I received this yarn, I knew it had to be used for a special project. It’s so incredibly soft and has the most beautiful texture! The highly defined twist of the plies paired with the bits of tweed throughout create a truly beautiful yarn. With a composition of 80% merino wool, 15% baby alpaca, and 5% viscose, you know this is going to an create extremely soft and warm finished piece. Baby alpaca is one of my favourite fibers to work with because it’s one of the softest, most luxurious fibers! Tip: If you ever see “alpaca” listed in a yarn, make sure it specifies “baby alpaca” as this is the softest form of alpaca yarn. I ordered this yarn for a specific project a couple years ago, but when I got my book deal, I had to put that idea aside for a while. Maybe one day I’ll get back to it, but for now, this yarn is being re-purposed into a Rosebud Raglan for my CAL (Crochet-Along)!

Patterns

Here are some designs I found that use Woodland Tweed as the suggested yarn. This yarn is mostly seen in knitting patterns and there isn’t much available for crochet patterns! You can, however, sub this yarn in for any pattern that calls for a heavy worsted/aran weight yarn.

1. Monte Rio Pullover (knit) – designed by Stephannie Tallent for Knit Picks

2. Pointe Aux Pins Pullover (knit) – designed by Sierra Morningstar for Knit Picks

3. Foxtrap Cowl (knit) – designed by India Hershey for Knit Picks

4. Valen (knit vest with hood) – designed by Maria Leigh for Knit Picks

5. Sparrow Cowl (knit) – designed by Lisa Seifert

My Thoughts

This is one of my favourite yarns to work with. It reminds me of one of my other favourites – City Tweed (another Knit Picks/WeCrochet yarn) that has a very similar look, composition and feel. It’s really fun to crochet with (and knit with) and I am definitely going to be ordering this again. It feels soft and smooth as you work with it, and doesn’t feel like it will pill over time. I also looked at the reviews on both the WeCrochet and Knit Picks website, and the reviews are all glowing, which is always a great sign! If you like City Tweed, I would definitely try out this yarn and play around with dyeing if that’s your thing! And vice versa, if you like this yarn, I would take a look at City Tweed because it’s basically this yarn, but offered in dozens of beautiful colours.

I will be ordering more of this and try hand-dyeing it myself, too! Stay tuned for that 🙂

This is the listing photo on WeCrochet’s Website. You can see it’s got a natural, creamy base with flecks of tweed throughout.

If you’re interested in using this yarn, you can try crocheting my Rosebud Raglan or the Whispering Pines Raglan that will be available November 30th on all of my pattern-selling platforms AND in my book!
