Yarn Review – Ombre Life

Hi guys!

I wanted to share my experience with a new-to-me yarn, Lion Brand Ombre Life. I just made a new project, the Wrapped Up In You shawl (which comes out this week!) with Lion Brand Ombre Life in the colourway Cloudy Day, shown below, and I am a huge fan!

Why It’s Unique

This is the first time I’ve ever used this type of yarn. Instead of twisted strands, this yarn consists of 4 individual threads that are meant to be worked as one strand. I didn’t realize this was the structure of it until I received it in the mail and actually started using it. I was worried about separating the strands accidentally, or missing one of the strands while I pull up a loop, however this wasn’t a huge issue. As long as you’re paying attention to your work, it’s quite easy to use. I actually like that it brings a new challenge to crocheting. Lol.

I separated the 4 strands so you can see, but as you’re working with it, they stick together quite nicely and don’t naturally spread apart like this.

Colour

I used the colourway Cloudy Day. This is a gorgeous cake that fades from a dull pink, to grey, to white. I wanted a light coloured project, so I chose this for my Wrapped Up In You shawl. I also would like to try Dusk and Midnight. I hope they add more colours, because I would love to see a brown/beige gradient yarn!

Gradient

This yarn is a gradient of 3 colours. The colour I used, Cloudy Day, consisted of 3 colours that faded from Pink on the outside, to grey, to white on the inside. This is created by changing the combination of colours for each of the 4 strands. For the solid pink, all 4 strands are pink. Then one of the 4 strands turns grey, as you work more then a second strand turns grey, until each one is grey. Then this creates the solid grey section, and the same type of fade works as it transitions to white.

Since each cake has 3 colours, I wanted to begin my new cake with the same colour as I ended my old cake with. So my project started with pink which I pulled from the outside, and faded to grey, then white. I ran out of yarn on the white section. So then, I reattached the new cake by pulling from the inside in order to continue working with white. I did the same thing for the third cake as well.

Weight

This was one of my first few times crocheting with a category 2 yarn. I’m really started to enjoy thinner weights opposed to chunky yarns. The thinner the yarn, the closer the finished product looks to store-bought in my opinion. It really allows for a lightweight project that is comfortable to wear. This yarn is light as air and an almost-3-skein project barely weighs anything.

Yardage

This yarn goes pretty far. Each cake has 437 yards or 400 meters. I was able to make a really large project with only 2.5 cakes.

Material

Ombre Life is a 50% cotton, 50% acrylic blend which means you can throw it in the washing machine, and that’s aways a bonus! It’s super soft, yet has the durability and breathability of cotton – perfect for a shawl or garment.

All in all, I really do love this yarn and I think it was the perfect choice for my latest project, the Wrapped Up In You shawl. Have you worked with this yarn before? What did you think? If you’re wanting to try it out, you can shop here for it and choose from 11 different colour options. I really want to try Dusk and Midnight next.. which colour would you choose?

Thanks for reading!

Happy crocheting,

Janine xo
