Hey guys!
Today I’ll be telling you about the Dakota Pom Pom Hat: the perfect one-skein project, and one of my favourite designs. To go straight to the pattern, click here or continue reading for more info + a pattern coupon code!
About
I designed this hat in late January and it’s one of my favourites. I wanted to figure out the perfect worsted-weight hat that slouches a little bit and isn’t too tight on the head. I played around with different stitch counts and needle sizes for quite a while, and ended up settling on this one! It uses 6mm needles which seem small, but really, you can probably make this hat in under 2 hours (if you’ve knit hats before and are familiar with circular needles). Still a quick project!
Construction
If you’re looking for a basic pom pom hat – this is it. If you know how to knit and purl, you can make this pattern! I wanted a winter hat that is really basic, simple, clean, classic. It fits perfectly as it’s stretchy, but not so stretchy that it will fall off. This hat is knit in the round on 6mm circular needles, starting with a simple rib stitch, and then switching to just a knit stitch for the remainder of the hat. It’s knit to a certain measurement (so you don’t have to worry about counting rows – yay!), and then it has some simple decreases until it’s ready to weave the ends through and close up your hat. This is as basic as a hat gets on circular needles, and I hope you love it! Feel free to play around with colour choices, stripes, fair isle, colour blocking, the brim length, the amount of slouch, and the pom pom! There is so much about this hat that you can play around with to really make it your own!

Yarn:
You can make this pattern with 1 skein, 6mm circular needles and a pompom maker.
I used Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice for this hat. I really wanted a simple, inexpensive yarn that you can get at any Michael’s Stores. You can click here to check out all the colour options for this yarn (there are a lot!). You’ll only need 1 skein of a colour of your choice – one skein is enough for the hat AND the pom pom. I basically used all the leftovers from the hat to make the pom pom and just kept wrapping the pom pom maker until I used up all the yarn.
With Vanna’s Choice, I especially love that most of the colour options align with the Wool-Ease Thick and Quick which is another one of my go-to yarns (like the Oatmeal WET+Q and Oatmeal Vanna’s Choice). It’s nice to have the exact same colour in both a worsted and a super bulky! It makes for easier matching situations. I love making hats in super bulky, and matching scarves in worsted (or vice versa)!
