About

Wrap yourself in the dreamy softness of the Watercolor Scarf, a delicate, pastel-hued winter accessory that feels as light as a cloud. The gorgeous tonal blend of colors of Scarfie Lite create a watercolor effect when knit up, inspiring the name of this design. With a beginner-friendly stitch pattern and a mindless 2-row repeat, the Watercolor Scarf is the perfect winter accessory to knit while cozying up on the couch on a blizzardy day.

Materials

Yarn: Worsted–Lion Brand Scarfie Lite in colorway “Tartan”

  • 43% Acrylic, 41% Poly, 9% Nylon, 7% Wool
  • 349 yds (320 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g) skein
  • Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes

Yardage: 3 skeins or 900 yds (823 m)

Yarn Substitution: Substitute Lion Brand Scarfie Lite with any similar medium, worsted weight (category #4) yarn that matches gauge. Most fiber contents will work fine in this project. Scarfie Lite has a lightweight, airy feel and a chainette-style construction with a fuzzy halo around it.

Note that worsted weight is often referred to as “aran” in the U.K., or “10-ply” in Australia.

Needles: Size U.S. 10 (6 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors

  • If adding optional fringe, you will also need a size 4.5mm (or smaller) crochet hook for easily attaching fringe, and an object measuring approximately 6” (15 cm) in length to wrap yarn around to create fringe (such as your phone, a book, a piece of cardboard, etc.)

Finished Measurements

Finished scarf measures approximately 16.5” (42 cm) wide and 70” (178 cm) long.

Gauge

4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = approximately 21 sts and 14 rows, blocked.

For Swatch

CO 27 sts using the long tail cast-on and follow pattern as written until your swatch measures approximately 5” (13 cm) in length. Bind off in pattern and block your swatch.

Measure the innermost 4” (10 cm) of your blocked swatch to get the most accurate measurement.

Pattern Notes

Skill Level: Easy

Right Side: While working this stitch, the right side of the fabric will face you as you knit all even-numbered rows, although both sides are attractive and either can be presented as the “right side”, if preferred.

Stitch Multiple: To adjust the width of your scarf, simply CO any odd number of stitches and follow the pattern as written.

Stitch Pattern: This textured stitch pattern is called the Jute Stitch, comprised of a 2-row repeat using the knit stitch, the purl stitch, and slipped stitches worked while the yarn is held in front of the work.

Construction: This scarf is worked flat until reaching your desired length. Instructions for optional fringe is included.
