About

The Foley Cowl is a quick-to-make, chunky, ribbed cowl; perfect for gift-giving! This cowl is shorter in the back and longer in the front so that it can be tucked into your coat to protect against the cold winter winds. Wear it three ways: fold the top edge to the inside, to the outside, or keep it as-is for maximum coverage.

Materials

Yarn: Super Bulky—Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick in Slate

  • 80% Acrylic, 20% Wool
  • 106 yds (97 m) per 6 oz (170 g) skein
  • Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes

Yardage Required: 1-2 skein(s) of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick (depending on colorway chosen), or 100 yds (91 m)

Yarn Note 1: Different colorways of this yarn contain varying yardage. Some colorways will require 2 skeins. Double check you have the correct total yardage before beginning.

Yarn Note 2: The sample shown used one full ball of Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in a solid colorway (where label reads 106 yds / 97 m per skein), with approximately 6 yds (6 m) left over. You could complete this project with just 1 skein if using a solid colorway, however if you want additional yarn to swatch with or a little extra as insurance, you may want to grab 2 skeins.

If substituting Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick, choose any similar, category #6, super bulky weight yarn that matches gauge. Always swatch before beginning to ensure you are happy with the resulting fabric.

Main Gauge Hook: Size U.S. N/15 (10 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Slip Stitch Edging Hook: Size U.S. K/10½ (6.5 mm) or any size smaller than your main gauge hook will work. I just chose a smaller hook to make it easier to insert and stitch into the row-ends. Feel free to adjust this hook as desired.

Notions: Tapestry needle

Measurements

Finished cowl should measure approximately 21.5” (55 cm) in circumference and 8” (20 cm) in height measured along the back, and 11” (28 cm) in height measured along the center front (the longest row).

Gauge

4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = 9 sts and 8 rows in yoslstBLO

Terms + Abbreviations

Written in U.S. Crochet terms

ch: chain

rep: repeat

sl st: slip stitch

st(s): stitch(es)

yoslst: yarn over slip stitch – yarn over, insert hook into designated stitch and pull up a loop through the stitch and pull directly through the two loops on your hook

yoslstBLO: yarn over slip stitch in the back loop only – yarn over, insert hook into back loop of designated stitch and pull up a loop through the stitch and pull directly through the two loops on your hook

Pattern Notes

Skill Level: Beginner

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row.

Reversible: There is no right side or wrong side; both sides are identical. Whichever side you choose to designate as the “right side” is your preference. Pattern will call for you to choose a right side when working the final slip stitch edging.

Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch.
