Emerson Beanie – Easy Beginner Double Brim Hat with Hearts Knitting Pattern
Hey guys!
Today I’m showing you the Emerson Beanie, a Valentine’s Day inspired variation of my Charleswood Beanie. Click here to go straight to the pattern or keep on reading for more info + a pattern coupon code!
This hat was part of my Valentine’s Day Pattern Bundle, which you can find here.
Construction
I created this hat by knitting in the round (forming a tube) on circular needles. You essentially knit a tube that is twice the height you want your brim, fold it up through the inside, and secure the brim by knitting 2 stitches together: your live stitches and your initial cast-on row. I put off knitting a double brim for quite a while because I was intimidated when it came to securing the brim, but I promise it’s not complicated at all! If I can do it, you can do it!I have provided you with detailed instructions if you’ve never done this before! I promise, it’s so easy.
The colourwork section uses 1 contrasting colour knit fair-isle. The hearts are created by knitting them with the main colour. This is called stranded knitting, or fair-isle knitting. If you were to look at the inside of this hat over the white section, the charcoal yarn has a string between each heart. This is called a “float” because it essentially floats in the back of your work until you need to pick up that colour again.
Tip: Make sure to leave your floats loose enough to account for the horizontal stretching that happens when you put a hat on your head!
You then continue knitting a tube until a certain length, and then begin your decreases and close the top of the hat! Voila!
Yarn
For this hat, I used one of my favourite acrylic yarns: Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice. I used charcoal and white for this design. The colour options for Vanna’s choice are so great, and you can find this yarn in any Michaels store. It’s the perfect amount of softness and can be machine washed if needed.
