Double Crochet All Day Raglan – Beginner Top-Down Raglan Sweater with Turtleneck
Helloooo friends!
Today I’m showing you the Double Crochet All Day Raglan Turtleneck (now that’s a mouthful, ain’t it?) which I’m calling the DC All Day Raglan for short. The DC All Day Raglan is a beginner-friendly, chunky sweater featuring slim-fitting sleeves to offset the boxy fit of the body, optional waist-shaping, and a big, cozy turtleneck. This pattern was written with first-time sweater crocheters in mind (or first-time raglan crocheters) since it can be worked up from start to finish in just a day or two, no matter the size.

About
Last month I released the Rosebud Raglan which has quickly become my most popular pattern to date! Since you guys seem so into the top-down sweater thing.. I wanted to create a suuuper beginner-friendly sweater for first-time garment crocheters or first-time raglan makers! This pattern is really easy to follow and you’ll be finished an entire sweater in no time. In case you’re not quite ready to tackle my Rosebud Raglan or Chainette Turtleneck, here’s a truly beginner-friendly, easy-peasy sweater pattern that any beginner crocheter can make with basic pattern-reading skills!
This cozy turtleneck sweater is worked seamlessly from the top-down with raglan shaping, suitable for absolute beginners wanting to venture into top-down garments. The benefit of working top-down sweaters is that there is no seaming involved, and you can try it on as you crochet to get the best fit possible for your unique measurements. Thanks to the super bulky yarn and the tall stitches, this sweater can be worked up in just a few days, no matter the size! There are plenty of notes throughout the pattern to help you customize your sweater to fit your body. Instructions on how to make minor adjustments to the turtleneck height, sleeve length, sleeve circumference, sweater length, waist shaping, are all included for you.

Materials
This pattern uses Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick – oh how I love this yarn! I can’t even tell you how many skeins of this stuff I have purchased in the last 3 years. This is the yarn I learned to knit and crochet with, and the yarn that I basically built my business around. It’s the best. It’s 20% wool, 80% acrylic. The acrylic gives it softness and durability (like allowing it to be machine-washable), while the wool makes it more breathable.
Yarn: Super Bulky—Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in Fossil
- 80% acrylic, 20% wool
- 87 yds [80 m] per 5-oz [140-g] skein
- Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes.
- Find the full crochet kit here.
Total Yardage:
- 590 (618, 667, 753, 845) (947, 1118, 1246, 1302) yds
- 540 (566, 610, 689, 773) (866, 1023, 1140, 1191) m
Note that different colorways of this yarn vary in yardage per skein. Make sure to check total yardage on label to ensure you have enough yarn to complete your sweater!
- If using a prints/stripes/metallics colorway (label reads 140g/skein), you will need: 7 (8, 8, 9, 10) (11, 13, 15, 15) skeins
- If using a solid/heather/twist/tweed colorway (label reads 170g/skein), you will need: 6 (6, 7, 8, 8) (9, 11, 12, 13) skeins
Substitute Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick with any super bulky weight (category #6) yarn that matches gauge.
Hook: Size U.S. L/11 (8.00 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions: Tapestry needle
Construction
Let’s talk about how exactly to make this sweater.
First, you will work the cowl. This is a super simple rectangle that will be joined to create ribbing for the turtleneck. Once you’ve completed the necessary length as outlined in the pattern, then you will turn your work 90 degrees to begin crocheting into the row-ends.
In this row, you will work 4 chain spaces which will set you up for the 4 raglan points of increase. These ch-2 spaces will become the 4 raglan increases that you see radiating diagonally from the cowl to the underarm. Each round increases by a specified number of stitches, and then you will separate for the body and the sleeves by skipping over all of the sleeve stitches to create armholes. Once you actually crochet your piece, it will all make sense for you. It really is very easy. If it’s not making sense to you now, don’t worry – I explain it all very clearly in the pattern! More than half of my testers had never made a raglan sweater before and none of them had any questions about the construction.
Then, you will continue working in joined, turned rounds to create the body until reaching your desired length. Too work the sleeves, you will re-attach your yarn in the center of the underarm and double crochet in joined, turned rounds with a few specified decreases until you reach the wrists.
I promise you are going to fall in love with top-down sweaters after you make this!
Tester Photos
Since this pattern test was a few years ago, I did my best to search back in the original email thread and save some photos! There were more testers than this, but here are a few photos I found.
