About

The Westwood Headband is a beginner-friendly, textured headband that pinches in the front. Comprised almost entirely of the double crochet stitch, the dynamic nature of this basketweave stitch pattern is sure keep your interest from start to finish. Because it is worked in one long rectangle, you are welcome to use any yarn weight by simply adjusting the beginning chain to establish the width of your headband.

The small, rectangular accent piece is worked last and wrapped around your main headband. This pinched detail is intended to be worn in the front to help frame the face while simultaneously hiding the seam, making this piece look completely seamless.

Materials

Yarn: Fingering—WeCrochet Stroll in Dove Heather

  • 75% Fine Superwash Merino Wool; 25% Nylon
  • 231 yds [211 m] per 1.76-oz [50-g] skein

Yardage: 1 skein of WeCrochet Stroll or 190 yds (174 m) of a similar fingering weight yarn.

Hook: Size U.S. C/2 (2.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle

Gauge

Stitch Gauge: 29 sts = 3.75″ (9.5 cm)
Row Gauge: Rows 1-18 = 4″ (10 cm)

To check your gauge, follow the pattern as-written. Your work should measure about 3.75” (9.5 cm) in width and 4” (10 cm) in height once you have completed Row 18.

If your work is smaller than these measurements, go up a hook size. If your swatch is larger than these measurements, go down a hook size.

Measurements

Finished headband measures 3.75″ (9.5 cm) in width and 19″ (48 cm) in circumference. Pattern is written to fit an average woman’s head of 21-23” (53-28 cm) as stated by the CYC.

  • Adjust the width by adding or subtracting stitches in multiples of 6 from the foundation chain.
    • See Thasanee’s headband in the tester photos below! She used a worsted weight yarn for her headband.
  • Adjust the length by adding or subtracting rows in multiples of 4 until reaching your desired circumference.

Pattern Notes

Adjusting Beginning Chain: To adjust the width of your headband, add or subtract stitches in multiples of 6. Pattern will work in any yarn weight.

Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch.

Other Yarn Subs

WeCrochet has a lot of lovely fingering weight yarns that would work wonderfully in this pattern. Feel free to use the suggested Stroll for a really beautiful headband, or, since this pattern uses such a small amount of yarn, you could use this as an opportunity to try something a little luxurious! You’ll only need 190 yds (or just 1 unit) of whatever you choose!

PATTERN

Main Headband

Row 1: FDC 29, turn.

Row 2-3: Ch 1, hdc in first st, FPdc in next 3 sts, *BPdc in next 3 sts, FPdc in next 3 sts; rep from * until 1 st remains, hdc in last st, turn.

Row 4-5: Ch 1, hdc in first st, BPdc in next 3 sts, *FPdc in next 3 sts, BPdc in next 3 sts; rep from * until 1 st remains, hdc in last st, turn.

Rep Rows 2-5 until you have a total of 84 rows worked or until desired length, finishing with a Row 4 rep. Keep in mind you will want the finished headband to measure approximately 2-4 inches (5-10 cm) shorter than the circumference of your head, since you want it to fit snug to your head without slipping off. Also note that it will stretch slightly with wear.

Fasten off, leaving 12″ (30 cm) tail for seaming. With a tapestry needle, use this tail to seam your headband closed using the whip stitch or seaming method of your choice.

Middle Piece

Row 1: FDC 11, turn.

Work Rows 2-5 from Main Headband. Rep these rows until your piece measures approximately 2.75″ (7 cm) in length, or long enough for you to wrap it around your Main Headband. It does not matter which row rep you finish with.

This is the middle piece that will wrap around your headband.

Fasten off, leaving a 6” (15 cm) tail for seaming the two short ends together.

Wrap this smaller rectangle around your headband, covering the seam from the Main Headband.

Wrap the smaller rectangle around the seam of your headband like so. With a tapestry needle, seam the short ends together using the whip stitch or seaming method of your choice, being careful not to catch the stitches from the main headband because you will want to be able to spin the seam of this middle piece to the wrong side of your headband so it will not show as you wear it.

With a tapestry needle, seam the short ends together using the whip stitch or seaming method of your choice, being careful not to catch the stitches from the Main Headband. Spin the seam to the inside of the headband, or whichever side you want to be the “wrong side”.

Weave in any remaining ends.

Tester Photos

I am so honoured to have so many lovely testers to help make this pattern the best it can be! Pattern testers are so valuable to any design – they use their own yarn, their time, and their own resources to make my design and provide me with their honest feedback. I appreciate each person so much!! Check out their work below – they did such an amazing job! I included their Instagram handles, the yarn they used, and any modifications they made to help give you inspiration to make your own!
