Today I’m telling you about the Tiny Hearts Double Brim, which is a double brim version of one of my most popular hats – the Tiny Hearts hat. A great one-skein project! About
I’ve been knitting this fair-isle hat style for a few years now, and it did really well at craft shows so I want to share it with you so you can make it, too! It uses my favourite bulky weight yarn and it uses under 1 skein per hat. If you’re an experienced knitter, it will likely take you roughly just over an hour, give or take, to finish this hat. It’s a quick project which makes it really great for knitting on repeat for market season. I added a faux fur pom pom in white to match the hearts, but of course you could add a yarn pom pom if you prefer!
Construction
This hat is knit in the round on circular needles.
You essentially knit a tube that is twice the height you want your brim, fold it up through the inside, and secure the brim by knitting 2 stitches together: your live stitches and your initial cast-on row. I put off knitting a double brim for quite a while because I was intimidated when it came to securing the brim, but I promise it’s not complicated at all! If I can do it, you can do it!
The hearts are created by knitting them with a contrasting colour. This is called stranded knitting, or fair-isle knitting. If you were to look at the inside of this hat, the white yarn has a string between each heart – this is called a “float” because it essentially floats in the back of your work until you need to pick up that colour again.
Tip: Make sure to leave your floats loose enough to account for the horizontal stretching that happens when you put a hat on your head! Too loose is much better than too tight because too tight can’t be fixed (except by frogging)!

Yarn:
I wanted to use a readily-available yarn for this design, so I used 2 colours of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick and Quick. I used this yarn almost exclusively for the last few years when it came to winter knitting. There is a reason it’s so popular – because the yarn is such high quality with the most amazing colour choices, with new colours being added all the time. If you don’t have this yarn on hand, you can use any super bulky #6 yarn, just make sure you do a gauge swatch and change your tension or needle size if needed.
I hope you have fun with this design! It’s fun to make and isn’t complicated to knit up. All you have to do is pick your colours and pick your pom pom style! I opted for a faux fur pom in a bright white, but I use a yarn pom quite often too. Have fun with it! I can’t wait to see how yours turns out!
