The Charleswood Beanie – Beginner Double Brim Knit Hat
Hi friends!
If you follow me on Instagram, you may have seen a new hat pattern that I just released! It’s called the “Charleswood Beanie”, named after an area in Winnipeg that is special to me. Despite how simple it is, this is one of my favourite hats I’ve ever made, and it’s one hat I actually wear all winter long.
You can find the pattern here, or continue reading for more info + a coupon code!
I have been knitting for 3 years now, and this is my first time knitting a hat that isn’t bulky weight! I love my chunky knits, but it’s time for something new π

Construction
I wanted a solid colour, double brim hat that wasn’t totally fitted at the top. My first sample was very fitted, so I added a few extra rows so that it had a little bit more height. It turned out perfectly!
This pattern uses only knit stitches. If you know how to do the knit stitch, you can definitely knit this hat! After the stitches are cast on, the hat is knit in the round (forming a tube) on circular needles. You essentially knit a tube that is twice the height you want your brim, fold it up through the inside, and secure the brim by knitting 2 stitches together: your live stitches and your initial cast-on row. I put off knitting a double brim for quite a while because I was intimidated when it came to securing the brim, but I promise it’s not complicated at all! If I can do it, you can do it!I have provided you with detailed instructions if you’ve never done this before! I promise, it’s so easy.
You then continue knitting a tube until a certain length, and then begin your decreases and close the top of the hat! Voila!
Yarn
Like I said, this was my first time using worsted weight yarn to knit a hat. I chose Lion Brand Vanna’s Choice because it’s one of my absolute favourite, widely-available acrylic yarns. They have the best colour options imaginable and this yarn is soft yet does not pill too much!
I used Vanna’s Choice yarn in the colour “oatmeal” with size 6mm circular needles. If you’re looking for a fun pattern that you can knit up while you’re watching Netflix, this is it. It’s a really mindless knit – the only parts you need to really pay attention to are the row where you double up the brim, and then the very simple decreases at the top. Easy-peasy.
