The Slouchy Jasper Beanie – Easy Knit 4-Colour Fair Isle Double Brim Hat

Hey guys,

The latest pattern I’ve got for ya is called The Jasper Beanie, named after Jasper, Alberta – a really beautiful place in Canada that I visited on road-trips with my family when I was young. Find the pattern here or continue reading for more info + pattern coupon code!

Construction:

It’s a slighty loose-fitting knitted hat with a fold-over brim and is knit in the round from the bottom-up. It starts with 1×1 ribbing that folds up to create a double layer brim for that classic look we all love. This hat is not super fitted – it’s designed to be a little bit relaxed so that it slouches nicely once the pompom is attached. I actually used the same sized needles for the brim, making sure not to knit the ribbing too loosely, but of course you could size down if you’d like. If your purls are quite loose, I’d recommend sizing down for the brim only. (Sometimes tension can change when purls are involved, yenno?)

Fair-isle knitting is used to create this design using 4 different colours. Fair-isle or stranded knitting is a type of colourwork knitting where you alternate between more than 1 colour of yarn by knitting with the current working yarn and carrying the non-working yarn in the back until you’re ready to knit with it. Then the current working yarn gets carried in the back as a new working yarn is used.

Finished hat using Lion Brand Jeans Yarn

Yarn:

Have you tried Lion Brand Jeans yarn? This was my first time using it, and let me tell you – I am a major FAN. I have many more projects planned with this yarn and can’t wait to try crocheting with it! There are a few reasons I’m obsessed with this new line:

  1. The weight. It’s seriously perfect. It’s categorized as a #4, but it’s much thinner than most #4 yarns I have in my stash. It made for a really comfortable hat that ended up being really nice and light. Still warm, but not too heavy.
  2. The material. It’s 100% acrylic, but is soooo soft. Sometimes acrylic feels a little scratchy at first, do you know what I mean? This one doesn’t. It’s suuuper soft at first touch, and I’m in love. You seriously need to feel this in your hands to understand!
  3. The colours. There are 7 options in this line. There are shades of blue (I mean, it’s called Jeans afterall), greys, and an orange-y brown. I’m gonna be totally honest here.. blue and orange has always been my #1 most HATED colour combo (LOL) but when I saw the colour options for the Lion Brand Jeans yarn, I knew I needed to give it a shot! I wasn’t sure how it would turn out when I finished but I’m so pleased with it and I think the colour combo is a nice surprise. (PS. My 2 fave colours so far are “vintage” grey and “topstitch” which is the orange-y brown.)

This hat uses 4 colours of Lion Brand Jeans Yarn:

Colour 1: “Brand New” (Brim + Pompom)

Colour 2: “Top Stitch

Colour 3: “Stonewash

Colour 4: “Faded

While I was making this hat, I actually made another design at the same time using this yarn. It is a similar hat style but it’s fitted and meant to be pompom-less. It’s a simple knit fold-over brim called the Alexander Beanie, which you can find here.
