Rosebud Poncho – Worsted Turtleneck Poncho Crochet Pattern

About

I created this piece because I needed a break from complicated sweater math. I like to alternate my pattern designs between a complicated garment and then an easy piece. By “easy”, I mean something easy to design – like a one-size scarf, to a garment with minimal grading like this one! Both types of patterns are great in their own way and both have a place in my heart! It’s nice to create a more complicated design to challenge myself, and it’s also nice to have a pattern you can sit there for hours and work on the same 1-row repeat. You know?

Okay, so, I had just finished my Grand Arches Cardi, and needed a new project to work on. I have about 72947360 skeins of Vanna’s Choice in my yarn room, so I grabbed some of that. Lately, I’ve been really loving this one stitch.. It’s the same stitch that I used in my Rosebud Raglan and my Chainette Turtleneck, (if you’ve kept up with those designs)! It’s really textured and really pretty. I used it for this poncho, too!

I named my raglan sweater the Rosebud Raglan because the stitch pattern reminds me of little rosebuds. My mom actually came up with the word “rosebud”, so props to you, Barb. I thought that since I used the same stitch pattern, I’d use the same name!

And here we have it: the Rosebud Poncho. Sort of like a distant-cousin pattern to the Rosebud Raglan.

I love ponchos because you can throw them on and look chic AF. Pair it with some tall boots and you’re golden. Your outfit underneath doesn’t even really matter, cause you can barely see it anyways!

Construction

This poncho is constructed in 3 pieces: 1 front panel, 1 identical back panel, and 1 cowl piece. Basically.. just 3 simple rectangles!

They are all seamed together at the end to create the finished garment. To clean up the raw edges, one row of single crochet is worked along the 2 sides, and this extra step makes a big difference.

The only stitches you need to know are single crochet and double crochet.. that’s it! The combination of these stitches creates that gorgeous textured look that the front and back panels have. Working in the back loop only is what gives the cowl that pretty ribbing!

Yarn

I’m gonna be honest, I love Vanna’s Choice. It’s inexpensive, it feels great, it’s durable, it’s got great stitch definition, there is an amazing colour selection, it’s widely available.. literally no complaints. It’s awesome. I will also add that for a project like this – one that requires a lot of yarn, it’s nice to use something that won’t break the bank.

For all those reasons, and the fact that I have so much of it in my stash, I chose to use Vanna’s Choice to make this poncho. I chose the colour Linen.

Like all of my designs, this is a size-inclusive pattern, ranging from size XS to size 5X. This is something that’s really important to me, and all my future designs will be size-inclusive as well. Promise.

For sizes: XS (S/M, L/XL, 2X/3X, 4X/5X), you will need:

9 (9, 10, 11, 12) skeins of Vanna’s Choice.

This is the equivalent to: 1442 (1513, 1583, 1866, 1946) yds of similar category 4, medium weight yarn that matches gauge.

You could make this poncho with any worsted weight yarn you like. I hope someone makes a colour-block version, because I would love to see how that looks!
