Pineberry Skirt – Crochet Pattern (from my book: Summer Crochet)

Hi friends!

This post includes everything you need to know about the Pineberry Skirt, a delicate, flowy maxi skirt with a drawstring tie and plenty of walking room!

This pattern is available as an independent PDF (Ravelry, Etsy, and other links included below) and is an original design from my new book Summer Crochet: 19 Delicate Designs with Simple Lace and Timeless Silhouettes, released in spring 2025. This book includes 19 size-inclusive, warm-weather garment and accessory patterns using a variety of techniques and construction methods to ensure there is something of value for every skill level. Each garment pattern is written with an inclusive size range from XS to 5XL and each size has been thoroughly tested, thoroughly tech edited, and fully charted! We had hundreds of crochet pattern testers for this book to make sure that each size fits its intended wearer in a way that makes them feel beautiful.

You can buy this book with confidence, knowing that each pattern was written for you and your unique body measurements.

About

Cute little strawberries increase in size down the length of this skirt to create a flowy, flouncy fabric at the bottom hem with plenty of walking room. A drawstring is woven through the top of the skirt to cinch the waistline for a custom fit. You might recognize these motifs as the classic “pineapple stitch”; however, when worked from the top down, they resemble strawberries. (Fun fact: A pineberry is a white strawberry that tastes like pineapple!)

This pattern is fully written + charted.

Materials

Yarn: DK/Light—Lion Brand Coboo® in colorway “White”

  • 51% cotton, 49% rayon from bamboo
  • 232 yds (212 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g) cake
  • Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes available in your region.

Yardage Required: 5 (6, 6, 7, 7) (8, 9, 9, 10) cakes or approximately 1100 (1225, 1350, 1450, 1575) (1800, 1925, 2050, 2150) yds (1006 [1120, 1234, 1326, 1440] [1646, 1760, 1875, 1966] m)

Yarn Substitution: Scroll down for an extensive list of yarn substitutes and yarns used during pattern testing.

Hook: Size U.S. F/5 (3.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle, scissors, 1 locking stitch marker

Yarn Substitution

Lion Brand Coboo has the following properties:

  • 51% cotton, 49% rayon from bamboo
  • 232 yds (212 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g) cake

Substitute Lion Brand Coboo with any similar DK-weight (category #3) yarn that matches gauge. Note that DK weight is often referred to as “8-ply” in Australia. Most fibers should work fine in this project, particularly plant fibers like cotton, bamboo or any plant fiber blends. Yarn with some bamboo content creates a beautifully slinky fabric that lends a lot of drape and movement to the finished skirt.

Appropriate Yarn Substitutes:

This list below includes some yarns I added myself in addition to the yarns used and recommended by testers.

As a reminder, you will need approximately 1100 (1225, 1350, 1450, 1575) (1800, 1925, 2050, 2150) yds / 1006 (1120, 1234, 1326, 1440) (1646, 1760, 1875, 1966) m of your chosen DK-weight yarn.

The following DK weight yarns should work well in your project!

Gauge

Although this skirt is worked in joined, turned rnds, your swatch will be worked flat for easier measuring.

For Swatch

You can find a supplementary video tutorial for this swatch on my YouTube channel here.

Ch 44.

Set-Up Row: Sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn. [43 sc]

Row 1: Ch 1, sc in first st, *ch 3, sk next 6 sts, ([dc, ch 1] 5 times, dc once more) in next st, ch 3, sk next 6 sts**, sl st in next st; rep from * to last st of rnd ending last rep at **, sc in last st, turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, Puff in first sc, *ch 1, [(sc, ch 3) in next ch1-sp] 4 times, sc in next ch1-sp, ch 1**, (Puff, ch 1, Puff) into the st below the sl st (stitching into the same st as the sl st was made); rep from * to end of rnd, ending last rep at **, Puff into last sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, Puff in space before first Puff (into the space created between the Puff and the 2 chs appearing on top of the Puff), *ch 2, [(sc, ch 3) in next ch3-sp] 3 times, sc in next ch3-sp, ch 2**, (Puff, ch 1, Puff) in ch-sp between Puffs; rep from * to end of rnd, ending last rep at **, Puff into space after last Puff, turn.

Row 5: Ch 1, Puff into space before first Puff, *ch 4, sk next ch3-sp, sc in next ch3-sp, ch 3, sc in next ch3-sp, ch 4**, (Puff, ch 1, Puff) in ch-sp between Puffs; rep from * to end of rnd, ending last rep at **, Puff into space after last Puff, turn.

Berry is complete.

Block your swatch the same way you would your finished piece. Your blocked swatch should measure approximately 9 inches (23 cm) wide and 2.5 inches (6 cm) tall. Each full berry repeat (which includes one strawberry and one column of Puffs) should measure approximately 3 inches (8 cm) wide and 2.5 inches (6 cm) tall. Note that the weight of your dress will help your stitches relax and drape much better than your swatch will allow. If you are getting close to these measurements, the hook and yarn combination you are using should work out fine to achieve the finished measurements listed in the sizing chart.

Pattern Notes

Skill Level: Advanced

Sizing: This skirt is written in nine sizes as follows: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X). Make sure to follow the numbers for your size only. Sizing is based on your hip measurement. Reference the sizing chart and read all notes beneath the sizing chart before beginning.

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each round until you begin the berry motifs. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous round. If only one number is provided, it applies to all sizes. Be sure to reference the stitch chart to check your stitch counts when working each berry.

Reversible: There is no right side or wrong side to this fabric; both sides are identical. You choose which side to wear as the “right side.”

Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch in this pattern unless otherwise indicated.

Berry Size: In order for your skirt to increase in circumference to give plenty of walking room, there are four berry sizes to be worked, labeled as follows: Berry A, B, C and D. You will begin with Berry A (the smallest size) at your waist and increase throughout the length of the skirt, finishing with Berry D (the largest size) at the bottom of your skirt.

Wavy Fabric: Your fabric will appear wavy as you crochet each section. Do not worry about this. This slight puckering is normal, and blocking will smooth the fabric out completely.

Construction: The Pineberry Skirt is worked seamlessly from the top down while increasing the size of each berry motif down the length of the skirt. A drawstring is woven through the top of the skirt to cinch the waistline for a custom fit.
