Paradigm Poncho – Chunky Knit Poncho with Cowl Neck Pattern

Hi friends!

Today I’m sharing the Paradigm Poncho with you – a cozy knit poncho knit in stockinette with a seed stitch border + matching seed stitch cowl. Click here to go straight to the pattern or continue reading for more info + a coupon code!

About

I started knitting this poncho over 2 years ago.. and finally just finished it! It’s a simple knit poncho worked in one piece with basic shaping around the neckline. A cowl neck is added last, by picking up stitches around the neckline and working in the round until the cowl is the height you want.

I chose Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick in a plain solid colour so this could be a quick knit, yet still look classy. I used Fisherman, which is their off-white colour.

The Paradigm Poncho knitting pattern is available as a knitting kit on LionBrand.com.

Tips

  • A tip with this piece is to block it or hang it on a hanger to help shape it. I know people say to never put knitwear on a hanger, but I broke the rules here! Usually, the stretching due to being hung on a hanger over time is a bad thing, but in this case, I wanted it to stretch. I hung it on a hanger so that the poncho stretched a little bit on the shoulders, and helped with drape once it was worn. It helped the poncho sit a little nicer on my body. So.. feel free to try this, or don’t – up to you!!
    • Blocking will help flatten out any curling corners.
  • Try to keep your stitches on the looser side to avoid a stiff garment. We want it nice and drape-y.
  • Make sure you do a gauge swatch to make sure you use the right sized needles for your tension. Otherwise, your poncho will be too big or too small.

Construction

This poncho is worked in one piece. First we cast on stitches and work the front panel, then bind off stitches to create the neckline, work a few rows on either side of the neckline to shape the shoulders, then cast on the same number of stitches we bound off to form an identical back neckline, and lastly we work the back panel the same as the front, just a few inches longer. We work the back panel a few inches longer so that it sits nicely on the neck, similar to the effect you would get by using short-rows.

Yarn

I used Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick. Feel free to sub the non-wool version, Thick & Quick (100% acrylic), or Cozy Wool from Michael’s. You could also try using worsted weight yarn, doubled up. If it matches gauge, you can use it! As long as it gives you a drape that you like.

Pattern is written for 3 sizes: S/M/L (XL/2X/3X, 4X/5X). You will need: 7 (8, 9) skeins or 740 (840, 950) yds of Lion Brand Wool-Ease Thick & Quick or similar category 6, super bulky weight yarn that matches gauge.
