About

The Jewel Tone Tee is a colorful summer tee with a softly curving neckline, short sleeves, and a relaxed fit. This lightweight stitch pattern is quick to crochet and brings some drape and stretch. The special feature of this design is the striping of three accent colors along the bottom edge and sleeves which, when worked in the linen stitch, creates a powerful statement detail resembling little jewels. Crocheted using Lion Brand Color Theory, a family of sophisticated colors intended to be mixed and matched with one another. You’ll need 4 colors to create your own Jewel Tone Tee – picking your colors is half the fun!

Materials

Yarn: Worsted—Lion Brand Color Theory in 4 colorways: Raisin, Bone, Admiral, Himalayan Salt

  • 100% acrylic
  • 246 yds (225 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g) skein
  • Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes.

Yardage Required:

2 (3, 3, 3, 3) (4, 4, 4, 4) skeins of Main Color (Raisin), or

  • 450 (525, 600, 675, 725) (850, 950, 1025, 1100) yds
  • 412 (481, 549, 618, 663) (778, 869, 937, 1006) m
  •

1 skein each of Accent Color A (Bone), Accent Color B (Admiral) and Accent Color C (Himalayan Salt), or

  • 65 (75, 90, 110, 135) (145, 165, 190, 225) yds
  • 60 (69, 83, 101, 124) (133, 151, 174, 206) m

each of 3 accent colorways

Substitute Lion Brand Color Theory with any similar category 4 (worsted) medium weight yarn that matches gauge.

Hook: Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle, several locking stitch markers to help with seaming

Gauge

4 x 4″ (10 x 10 cm) = 19 sts (count this as 10 sc and 9 ch) and 19 rows in linen stitch

For swatch:

Ch 24.

Row 1: Sc in 4th ch from hook (skipped chs count as 1 sc and 1 ch), *ch 1, sk next ch, sc in next ch; rep from * to end of row, turn.

[12 sc, 11 ch]

Row 2-22: Ch 2 (counts as 1 sc and 1 ch), sk first sc, sc in first ch-sp, *ch 1, sk next sc, sc in next ch-sp; rep from * to end of row, turn.

Block your swatch the same way you would your finished top. Once dry, measure the innermost 4” (10 cm) of your swatch (not the edges and not the first row) to get the most accurate measurement.

Abbreviations

Written in U.S. Crochet terms

  • ch: chain
  • ch-sp: chain space
  • rep: repeat
  • rnd: round
  • sc: single crochet
  • sc2tog: single crochet 2 stitches together
  • sk: skip
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)
  • tch: turning chain

Pattern Notes

Skill Level: Intermediate

Sizing: This top is written in nine sizes as follows: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X). Make sure to follow the numbers for your size only.

  • An “x” indicates that particular row of instruction does not apply to your size.

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row/rnd. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row/rnd. If only one number is provided, it applies to all sizes.

Reversible: There is no right side or wrong side; both sides are identical. Whichever side you choose to wear as the “right side” is your preference.

Turning Chain: The turning chain (ch-2) counts as 1 single crochet and 1 chain.

Right-handed vs Left-handed Crocheters: The pattern is written with right-handed crocheters in mind (those who hold their hook in their right hand and crochet each row toward the left). If you are a left-handed crocheter, any instructions referring to the “right-hand side” or “left-hand side” should be reversed.

Colorwork: For each colorwork round, you will work the final slip stitch join in the new color, dropping and cutting the old color. Continue to work the following round with the new color. With every color change, cut the old color. Tie the beginning tail together with the tail from the end of the round and weave in the ends.

  • You may want to designate a “wrong side” and “right side” at this point and keep your tail ends woven to the wrong side of your top (rather than weaving them through the stitches) to prevent them from popping out to the right side during wear.

Construction: This top is constructed in 2 separate pieces that are worked flat from the bottom-up in your main color: 1 front panel and 1 back panel. These pieces are seamed together at the shoulders and the sides. Then you will begin the colorwork section from the top-down until reaching your desired length. Matching colorwork is added to the sleeves, too.
