Houndstooth Baby Blanket – Crochet Pattern for Ombre/Fade Blanket! (Customizable)
Hi all!
This post includes everything you need to know about the Houndstooth Baby Blanket, a statement color-blocked blanket, crocheted in the houndstooth stitch, a two-toned variation of the lemon peel stitch. This blanket was inspired by my Houndstooth Coatigan, a cardigan pattern released earlier this year!

About
This blanket uses alternating single crochets and double crochets while changing colors each row to create the houndstooth stitch. One main color is used while transitioning 5 accent colors to create the appearance of an ombré/fade until your blanket reaches your desired size. Feel free to choose any colors you love; your blanket does not have to fade as the sample blanket does – bright sections of color would be just as lovely!
Materials
Yarn: Worsted—Lion Brand Basic Stitch in 6 colorways: Ivory (Main Color), Hazelnut, Nutmeg, Truffle, Cocoa, Ebony
- 100% acrylic
- 185 yds (170 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g) skein
- Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes
Yardage Required:
Main Color (MC): Ivory – 6 skeins or 1100 yds (1006 m)
Color 1 (C1): Hazelnut – 1 skein or 170 yds (155 m)
Color 2 (C2): Nutmeg – 1 skein or 170 yds (155 m)
Color 3 (C3): Truffle – 1 skein or 170 yds (155 m)
Color 4 (C4): Cocoa – 1 skein or 170 yds (155 m)

Substitute Lion Brand Basic Stitch with any similar category 4 (worsted) medium weight yarn that matches gauge. Always swatch before beginning to ensure you are happy with the resulting fabric.
Hooks:
- Main Gauge Hook: Size U.S. 7 (4.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
- Border Hook: Size U.S. G/6 (4 mm) or size that is 0.5 mm smaller than Main Gauge Hook
Notions: Tapestry needle, 4 locking stitch markers
Gauge
4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = 14 sts and 12 rows in the houndstooth stitch with Main Gauge (larger) hook, blocked.
For Swatch:
Using CC, ch 23, follow instructions from Section 1 until you have at least 18 rows completed. Measure the inner 4″ (10 cm) of your blocked swatch to get the most accurate measurement. Within 4” (10 cm), you should have 14 sts and 12 rows in order to achieve the specified finished measurements.

Pattern Notes
Skill Level: Beginner
Sizing: This blanket is written as a baby blanket. To adjust the sizing, begin with any odd number of chains (this establishes your width), and work the repeats until reaching your desired length.
Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row in italics. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row.
Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch anywhere in this pattern.
Reversible: There is no right side or wrong side to this stitch pattern; however, each side looks slightly different. One side will appear to have the MC as the dominant color, and the other side will appear to have C1-C5 as the dominant colors. You choose which side to designate as the right side, as this is purely preference.
Changing Colors: When changing colors at the end of each row, work the last stitch of the row with the old color, but do not work the final yarn-over to close the stitch. Work this yarn-over with the new color that you have been carrying across the row. Then drop the old color and continue crocheting with the new color. (See page 4 or watch this video.)
