Flower Market – Crochet Pattern for Granny Square Baby Blanket [No Seaming Involved!]

Hi all!

This post includes everything you need to know about the Flower Market Baby Blanket, a crochet blanket pattern that uses a join-as-you-go method that joins all 25 squares with just one long, winding row of double crochet! I used Lion Brand Color Theory for the main color and Lion Brand Mandala Ombre for the flowers which is a self-striping yarn! I separated each colorway within Mandala Ombre to get multiple colorways for my blanket.

About

If you follow Knits ‘N Knots closely, you’ll know that I’m halfway through my first pregnancy! Yay! I’m 20 weeks as I’m writing this. It’s only fitting that I added at least one baby pattern to my lineup before the year ends!

During my first trimester, I needed projects that I could work on somewhat mindlessly without needing to do any extensive grading – my brain just could not deal with computers screens or math! So, I began a cute granny square project that I could work on whenever I was feeling up to it. Out of that period of my life came this pattern!

This sweet little baby blanket is crocheted in 25 identical squares and uses a continuous join-as-you-go method, meaning no seaming is required! This blanket separates each colorway within a self-striping yarn to get your five accent colors for the flowers. The color combinations for this blanket are endless.

Named “Flower Market” since picking and choosing the colors for these flowers is much like building your own flower bouquet at a flower market!

PS – if you want to use stash yarn, this is a great scrappy, stash-buster project!

Pattern Notes

Skill Level: Intermediate

Right Side: You will always have the right side facing you as you work this pattern.

Construction: This blanket is constructed by working 25 squares worked the same way with different color patterns. Once all 25 squares are completed, you will join the squares using a seamless join-as-you-go method which leaves you with only the two tails from this one long row to weave in!

Colors: Most of the colorways of Mandala Ombré contain 6 different colors within it; this pattern will use 5 of those 6 colors. If your cake has fewer than 5 colors, you can choose which color combination to repeat for the remaining squares. You can also choose to use 100 yds (92 m) each of five colors of your choosing, or even use scrap yarn!

Color Combinations

If you are using the suggested Lion Brand Mandala Ombré, choose five colors within your cake to use for your blanket. For example, I had six colors with my Mandala Ombré cake and chose to eliminate the darkest green shade, leaving me with these five colors: pink, purple, light blue, turquoise, and light green. If you use a cake with only has 4 colors, make 6 of each color combination, then repeat any one for the last square. Separate each colorway by winding each stripe of color into separate balls before beginning as shown in the photo below.

This blanket will work with any number of accent colors. Sample shown uses five different color combinations, creating five identical squares with each combination. Feel free to deviate from this color pattern here and make up your own color pattern if you would prefer. You could also choose to work straight from your Mandala Ombré cake for rounds 1-3 without separating each colorway if you would rather not cut and change colors each round. You could also use scrap yarn for this project since each round of color uses very small amounts of yarn.

For a blanket like the sample shown, you will work 5 squares of each color combination.

The pattern even includes a little work sheet for you to lay out your color choices! It looks like this:
