About

The name Cobra Crop was suggested by an Instagram pal, Anna (@hooks.and.tangles), and as soon as I read her comment, I knew it was the perfect name for this piece! The moment after I posted some behind the scenes videos of this project, I had a ton of messages from you guys telling me how much it looks like snakeskin! So, that’s where the name “Cobra Crop” came from, and I love that so many of you made that connection.

The goal for this design was to create an easy pattern with drop-shoulders and a lower neckline. I started swatching some of my go-to stitch patterns with a few different hook sizes and landed on the granite/linen/moss/seed stitch (there are many names for it) with my 4.5mm hook. I was happy with the way the fabric felt with this stitch combination, and felt like it brought the spring-y vibe I was going for. The linen stitch allows for great movement of the fabric since because of all the chain stitches – one of the reasons I use it so often!

Yarn

The yarn used in this pattern is Lion Brand – Comfy Cotton Blend – a 50% cotton, 50% polyester blend in the colourway Cool Night. This was my first time trying this particular yarn line, and I really enjoyed it. It’s the perfect material to create a light and breathable warm-weather top. It’s really soft, and it comes in large, 200g cakes, which I love. One thing I was wondering about was whether or not it would split as I was crocheting with it, and it totally didn’t at all. It was great to crochet with and feels great to wear! And a bonus –  it’s machine-washable and dryable according to the yarn label.

You’ll need only:

3 (3, 3, 4, 4) (4, 5, 5, 5) cakes of Comfy Cotton Blend

Or 1000 (1100, 1150, 1325, 1400) (1550, 1625, 1800, 1875) yds [915 (1006, 1052, 1212, 1281) (1418, 1486, 1646, 1715) m] of another light weight, category #3 yarn that matches gauge.

This is the colourway Cool Night in Comfy Cotton Blend!

Construction

This top is constructed in 4 separate pieces that are worked flat from the bottom-up: 1 front panel, 1 back panel, and 2 identical sleeves. This is a really straight-forward pattern that you’ll breeze through – the only shaping you’ll have to do is basic decreasing at the neckline and in the sleeves (just a few simple sc2tog)!

Sizing

This is a size-inclusive pattern, written for 9 sizes: XS (S, M, L, XL)(2X, 3X, 4X, 5X) to fit bust sizes 28-30 (32-34, 36-38, 40-42, 44-46) (48-50, 52-54, 56-58, 60-62)“ based on the CYC sizing standards. There is 2-4″ (5-10 cm) of positive ease built in to the sweater. Since the sleeves are worked separately from the body, you can make any size of sleeve if you think the measurements of another size will give you a better fit.

When choosing a size, choose a garment bust size that is 2-4″ (5-10 cm) larger than your actual bust measurement, depending on how much positive ease you would like in your sweater. For reference, model has a 34″ (86 cm) bust and is wearing a size small with a garment bust measurement of 36″ (91cm), worn with 2″ (5 cm) of positive ease.
