About: Champagne Glow
No collection of sweaters would be complete without including at least one unconventional silhouette. From the asymmetrical neckline to the delicate, single sleeve, this unique sweater packs a punch. The eye is gracefully drawn to the delicate sleeve that blooms into the generously wide wrist, adding a dynamic, playful element. The gracefully asymmetrical neckline is comfortable to wear and stays in place thanks to the snug fit and the placement of the single shoulder. The neckline and sleeves are a dynamic duo, coming together to form a striking holiday sweater or a flirty top for your next date night.
Getting Started: Knowing Your Measurements
This book uses the Craft Yarn Council (CYC) to determine sizing. The CYC is the industry standard when it comes to knit and crochet sizing. While you will be able to produce a beautiful sweater by following the written patterns, I also like to include customization tips throughout each pattern so that you can adjust based on your unique body measurements; for example, shortening or lengthening a sleeve, or adjusting for a larger upper arm than written for your size. This way, you can modify the pattern with confidence, if needed. When making garments for myself, I usually need to shorten tops or sweaters because I have a short torso. My hips also fall under a different size than my bust. Not everyone fits perfectly into these sizing standards; they are simply averages, not set-in-stone numbers.
Understanding how your body deviates from the CYC standard measurements gives you the ability to tailor a sweater to perfectly fit you, rather than feel disappointed that your body doesn’t fit into the sizing standards. I recommend that you measure the largest part of your bust and then refer to the CYC website (click here) to find out which size you would fall under. Then, look at the other measurements that are included for your size, and see which of these measurements deviate from your actual body measurements. Knowledge is power, and once you understand how your body deviates from the CYC standards, you will be able to anticipate this deviation and assume it translates through most patterns. For example, if your upper arm circumference is slightly larger than the CYC sizing chart reads, then you can expect you may have to ignore a few decrease rows when working the sleeves of your next sweater, or even follow the sleeve instructions for the next size up, if possible.
Getting Started: the Champagne Glow Sweater
Yarn: Sport—Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino in Mustard
- 55% wool, 33% acrylic, 12% cashmere
- 137 yds [125 m] per 1.8-oz [50-g] skein
- Find this yarn on lovecrafts.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes.
Yardage: 9 (10, 10, 12, 13) (15, 16, 18, 19) skeins or 1175 (1250, 1350, 1550, 1750) (1950, 2150, 2450, 2575) yds [1074 (1143, 1234, 1417, 1600) (1782, 1965, 2240, 2354) m]
Note: Some budget-friendly alternatives include Lion Brand LB Collection Superwash Merino, Lion Brand Touch of Merino, Premier Cotton Fair, Premier Anti-Pilling Everyday DK Merino Blend, WeCrochet Brava Sport, WeCrochet Wool of the Andes Sport.
Substitute Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino with any similar sport weight, category #2 yarn that matches gauge. Choose a fiber that has memory and some bounce; avoid fibers that will grow substantially after blocking or washing. It is important that your sweater lays snug to your body because too much growth will cause the sweater to sag.
Hook: Size U.S. F/5 (3.75 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions: Tapestry needle, locking stitch markers
Gauge: 5.5 x 5.5″ [14 x 14 cm] = 5 shells and 18 rows in shell stitch (see instructions below)
I wanted to include the gauge swatch instructions below so that you could practice swatching with your chosen yarn to ensure you have a yarn that will work with this pattern ahead of time. This way, you can see if you have something in your stash that will work before ordering new yarn.
For swatch:
Row 1: FSC 43.
Row 2: Ch 1, sc in first st, *sk next 2 sts, shell in next st, sk next 2 sts, sc in next st; rep from * to end of row, turn.
Row 3: Ch 2, 3 dc in first sc, *sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, shell in next sc; rep from * to end of row, omitting the very last shell of final rep, work 3 dc in final sc of row, turn.
Row 4: Ch 1, sc in first dc, *sk next 2 dc, shell in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc; rep from * to end of row, turn.
Rep Rows 3 and 4 until your swatch measures approximately 7″ [18 cm] in height.
Block your swatch. Measure the inner 5.5″ [14 cm] of your blocked swatch to get the most accurate measurement.
Customization Ideas + Tips When Crocheting This Pullover
Tips
- Sizing: This sweater is written in nine sizes as follows: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X). Make sure to follow the numbers for your size only.
- Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row/rnd. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row/rnd. If only one number is provided, it applies to all sizes.
- Yarn: Choose a fiber that has memory and some bounce; avoid fibers that will grow substantially after blocking or washing. It is important that your sweater lays snug to your body because too much growth will cause the sweater to sag.
- Reversible: There is no right side or wrong side. You choose which side to wear as the “right side.”
- Seaming: When seaming your garment, make sure to keep all seams loose and do not pull tight in order to maintain some stretch, otherwise this seam will pucker during wear.
- Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch.
- Construction: The body of this sweater is worked in two identical pieces that get seamed together while leaving an armhole opening for the sleeve to be worked directly onto the edge of the opening. The sleeve is worked flat without any shaping until increasing at the wrist to create the wide, scalloped silhouette. It is then seamed lengthwise when completed.
Customization Ideas
- To change the length of your sweater: If you would like your sweater to be longer or shorter than written for your size, add or subtract rows in multiples of 2 as you see fit. You should finish on a Row 4 rep. Make note of how many rows you added or eliminated so that you can make the same alteration to both panels.
- To tailor the upper sleeve to your upper arm measurement: Follow any sleeve size that you like. Take a look at the sizing chart to find the upper arm measurement that you thin would work best for your arm. If you think the measurements of a different size would better suit your arm measurements, you can follow the instructions for any sleeve size; you don’t necessarily have to stick with the same size you have been working up to this point if you think another size will give you a better fit. If you decide to follow a different size, make sure you adjust your sleeve opening to match the size you are following.
- Optional Neckline Finishing Row: (Sample shown does not have this finishing row.) If you would like to add a finishing row to the neckline, you can attach yarn to the side seam on the sleeveless part of your sweater and sc evenly around entire neckline as many times as you like. You may do so in joined, turned rounds or work seamlessly in a spiral—the choice is yours. This step can also help provide additional coverage and tighten the neckline if you crocheted too loosely and will prevent your sweater from stretching over time.
Yarn Substitutions
The yarn used in my sample is a 55% wool, 33% acrylic, 12% cashmere blend, however you are free to use any fiber content that you like for your own version! The only thing to keep in mind is that you will want to choose a fiber with some memory and bounce; and avoid fibers that will grow substantially after washing or blocking. You may want to avoid 100% acrylic yarns and remember that Superwash yarn often grows with blocking, so just be aware of this fact. Testers still used Superwash yarns and their finished sweaters ended up looking and fitting perfectly. Always swatch before beginning so you can be sure your chosen yarn creates a fabric you love! Listed below you will see a variety of yarns that will work just fine in place of Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino, so long as you match gauge!
If you choose a yarn with great drape with a tendency to grow after washing, size down in the pattern.
Lion Brand Yarns:
- Lion Brand LB Collection Superwash Merino
- Lion Brand Truboo (This yarn grows substantially with blocking and washing, but does have incredible drape. If you choose to use Truboo, be sure to size DOWN in this pattern.)
