About

Worked seamlessly from the top down, the Cashew Cardigan is a light raglan cardigan with a short-row collar that can be converted to an optional button band. This piece is lightweight enough for year-round wear, and is perfect for the transitional season from winter to spring. The Cashew Cardigan has compound raglan sleeves, meaning it employs varied increase rates to create a more refined sleeve that slopes with the curve of the body for an improved fit. This detail combined with the short-rows in the collar and the lightweight yarn creates a truly sophisticated crochet wearable, appropriate for the office or day-to-day wear.

Materials

Yarn: Sport/light DK—Lion Brand Superwash Merino in Hemp (brown); tutorial photos shown in Elm (green)

  • 100% Extra Fine Merino Wool
  • 306 yds (280 m) per 3.5 oz (100 g) skein
  • Find this yarn on lionbrand.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes
  • Grab the Lion Brand crochet kit here

Yardage Required: 5 (5, 6, 7, 8) (9, 10, 11, 11) skeins for sizes XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X), or

  • 1275 (1425, 1600, 1850, 2150) (2450, 2750, 3050, 3250) yds
  • 1165 (1303, 1463, 1691, 1965) (2239, 2514, 2788, 2971) m

If substituting Lion Brand Superwash Merino, choose any similar category #3, light, DK weight yarn or category #2, sport weight yarn that matches gauge. Note that this yarn is labeled a category #3, light weight yarn but you will likely be able to match gauge with many category #2, sport weight yarns as well. Always swatch before beginning to ensure you are happy with the resulting fabric.

Hook: Size U.S. F/5 (3.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle, several locking stitch markers, 4-5 buttons measuring 0.75”/2 cm (optional), sewing needle and matching thread for sewing buttons onto your cardigan (optional)

Gauge

4 x 4” (10 x 10 cm) = 21 dc and 12 rows, blocked.

Swatching Note: Superwash yarns are known to grow a lot once washed and blocked. Be sure to wash and block your swatch the same way you would your finished garment before measuring gauge.

Pattern Notes

Skill Level: Intermediate

Sizing: This cardigan is written in nine sizes as follows: XS (S, M, L, XL) (2X, 3X, 4X, 5X). Make sure to follow the numbers for your size only.

  • View full sizing chart on next page

Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each row/rnd in italics. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous row/rnd. If only one number is provided, it applies to all sizes.

  • An “x” indicates that particular instruction does not apply to your size.
  • There are several Stitch Count Checkpoints along the way to help ensure you are on the right track before proceeding to the next section.

Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch anywhere in this pattern.

Construction: This cardigan is worked seamlessly from the top down with raglan shaping. You will work the specified increases until reaching your yoke depth, then separate your work to create space for the sleeves and body. The body is worked next with post stitch ribbing along the bottom hem, then the collar is worked with short-rows and optional buttonholes. Lastly, you will crochet the sleeves which taper and have matching post stitch ribbing on the cuffs.

Adjusting Length: To adjust the length, simply continue crocheting the body to your desired length before ribbing.

Buttons: The optional 4-5 buttons included in the Notions section are not shown in most of the sample photos since the Lion Brand kit does not come with buttons.

  • Tip – the thrift store is a great place to find unique buttons for a fraction of the price!
