Bellflower Bucket Bag – Crochet Pattern (from my book: Summer Crochet)
Hi all!
This post includes everything you need to know about the Bellflower Bucket Bag, a floral-inspired crochet pattern for a structured, cylindrical bag featuring an eye-catching lace panel and some fun leather details!
This is the sister pattern to the Bellflower Bucket Hat (found here)—a matching hat written for five sizes using the same lace stitch pattern!
This pattern is available as an independent PDF (Ravelry, Etsy, and other links included below) and is an original design from my new book Summer Crochet: 19 Delicate Designs with Simple Lace and Timeless Silhouettes, released in spring 2025. This book includes 19 size-inclusive, warm-weather garment and accessory patterns using a variety of techniques and construction methods to ensure there is something of value for every skill level. Each pattern is written with an inclusive size range from XS to 5XL and each size has been thoroughly tested, thoroughly tech edited, and fully charted! We had hundreds of crochet pattern testers for this book to make sure that each size fits its intended wearer in a way that makes them feel beautiful.
You can buy this book with confidence, knowing that each pattern was written for you and your unique body measurements.

About
The structured base of the Bellflower Bucket Bag can handle all of your everyday essentials while maintaining its shape. The additional materials used—including a leather drawstring, a leather purse strap and a wooden bag base—each contribute to the elevated, store-bought look of this bucket bag. Whether you’re out for a night on the town or lounging by the pool, the Bellflower Bucket Bag will keep your belongings secure while adding a beachy vibe to any summer outfit.
This is the sister pattern to the Bellflower Bucket Hat (found here)—a matching hat written for five sizes using the same lace stitch pattern!
We shot this bag in Beverly Hills and even made as top to the iconic Beverly Hills Hotel, which was pretty cool to see in real life! I had to sneak a few hotel shots into my photos for this piece!
Materials
Yarn: DK—Hobbii Rainbow 8/8 in colorway “03”
- 100% Cotton
- 82 yds (75 m) per 1.75 oz (50 g) skein
- Find this yarn on hobbii.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes available in your region.
Yardage Required: 6 skeins or approximately 425 yds (389 m)
If you choose to crochet the drawstring instead of using the leather drawstring option, you will need (approximately) an additional 15 yds (14 m).
Yarn Substitution: Scroll down for an extensive list of yarn substitutes and yarns used during pattern testing.
Hook: Size U.S. F/5 (3.75 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge
Notions (links included below): Tapestry needle and 2 locking stitch markers, 1 wooden basket base/bottom measuring approximately 7.75 to 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter (if using a basket base without holes around the perimeter, you will also need fabric glue), 1 removable crossbody purse strap (often called “purse replacement strap” with snap hooks on each end to be clipped to your bag; sample shown has adjustable length ranging from 43 to 51 inches [109–130 cm] with a strap width of 0.47 inch [1.2 cm]), a leather drawstring* measuring approximately 34 inches (86 cm) in length
*Note that instructions are included within the pattern to crochet a drawstring if preferred, so the leather drawstring is optional.

- This one is a set of 2 (CA)

- 5 pack of 8″ wooden bases (US)

- I used one from this set of 2 – 4 colour options (CA) – in my sample I chose the “brown” colourway

Leather Drawstring
- I used this listing – 28 color/hardware options (CA) – in my sample I chose the “brown” colourway with the gold hardware

Yarn Substitution
Hobbii Rainbow 8/8 has the following properties:
- 100% Cotton
- 82 yds (75 m) per 1.75 oz (50 g) skein
Substitute Hobbii Rainbow 8/8 with any similar light DK-weight (category #3) yarn that matches gauge. This yarn is in between a DK and a worsted, and is sometimes listed as both. Cottons will work best for this project, particularly those that feel “stiff,” to lend some structure to your finished bag. (Note that DK weight is often referred to as “8-ply” in Australia.) One tester also used a raffia yarn (a paper yarn!) and her bag turned out incredible, so that could work well, too, as long as you can match gauge with it!
Appropriate Yarn Substitutes:
This list below includes some yarns I added myself in addition to the yarns used and recommended by testers. I tried to link them whenever possible. Some are technically a worsted weight, but gauge was still achieved with these.
* Reminder that you will need a total of 425 yds (389 m) of your chosen yarn.
The following DK weight and light worsted yarns should work well in your project!
- Bernat Handicrafter Cotton (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- Big Twist Yarns Favorite Cotton (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- Estelle Sudz Cotton (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- Hobbii Friends Cotton 8/8 (DK – 100% Cotton)
- Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- Hobby Lobby Crafter’s Secret Cotton (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- K+C Essential Cotton (DK – 100% Cotton)
- Lily Sugar ‘n Cream (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- Lion Brand Re-Up (worsted – 70% Recycled Cotton 30% Recycled Polyester)
- Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton DK (DK – 100% Cotton)
- Loops & Threads Classic Cotton (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- Niceec Raffia (raffia look-a-like – 100% Polyester)
- Paintbox Yarns Cotton Aran (100% Cotton)
- Paintbox Yarns Recycled Cotton Worsted (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- Peaches and Creme Original – (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- Rico Creative Cotton Aran (100% Cotton)
- WeCrochet Dishie (worsted – 100% Cotton)
- WeCrochet Vividie (worsted – 100% Mercerized Cotton)
- Yarn and Colors Epic (worsted – 100% Cotton)
Gauge
For Swatch: Work first 8 rnds of Base (explained in pattern), creating a small circle. First 8 rnds of circle should measure approximately 3.75 inches (9.5 cm) in diameter, blocked. Do not cut your yarn once you have completed your swatch; keep the yarn attached to the skeins. Once your swatch matches gauge, you can proceed with the remainder of the pattern using this swatch.
Finished Measurements
The base of the bag measures approximately 8 inches (20 cm) in diameter (Measurement A).
The finished bag measures approximately 12 inches (30 cm) in height (Measurement B).

Pattern Notes
Skill Level: Intermediate
Stitch Counts: Stitch counts are listed after each round. If no stitch count is given, there has been no change since the previous round.
Right Side/Wrong Side: The side that faces you as you crochet each round of single crochet is the right side.
Turning Chain: The turning chain does not count as a stitch unless otherwise indicated.
Joined Rounds/Spiral: This bag is worked in a spiral with the exception of the lace panel, which is worked in joined, turned rounds.
Construction: The Bellflower Bucket Bag is crocheted seamlessly in the round in a spiral, worked from the bottom up. You will begin with the base, increasing until reaching the proper diameter, then you will work several rounds without any increases to form the sides of your bag while also integrating the lace panel into your stitches. A round of eyelets is worked near the top of the bag into which you will weave a leather (or crocheted) drawstring to cinch your bag closed. A wooden basket base and a removable purse strap are added last. Note that the lace panel is worked in joined, turned rounds, while the remainder of the bag is worked in a spiral.
Base Stitch Count: Each round of the base increases by 7 stitches.

Below each photo I have included each person’s social media account as well as listed their particular yarn choice and any notes they left regarding how well they thought it worked in the pattern.
