About

I was looking through my pattern library earlier this month and noticed that I don’t have any patterns for cowls! I’ve made about a bazillion, but never wrote down a pattern for them. So, here’s one that you can make for free!

I’m really excited to have partnered up with We Crochet to be able to bring you guys some free patterns this year. If you haven’t heard of them, We Crochet is the sister company to Knit Picks and launched in late 2019. They created We Crochet as a place for crocheters to go with crochet tools, crochet books, crochet patterns – basically, everything caters to crocheters. Sometimes crochet seems to take the back seat to knitting so it’s nice to have all the yarn + crochet resources in one place, just for us!!

Yarn

I used Simply Wool Worsted for this project, in the colorway “Wendy“. Wendy is a really pretty, natural looking beige.

I chose this yarn for this project for a special reason: This yarn is made of 100% eco-wool and has NO dyes or bleach! I love that so much. The colors available are the actual colors of the sheep fibers, and I was drawn to the neutral palette of this yarn as soon as I saw it. You will only need 2 hanks, although you could use just 1 if you want a shorter cowl. I used about 1.5 skeins, so if you ordered 3 you could make yourself 2 cowls. This yarn is also only $6.99 per hank, meaning you can make the full-size cowl for like $10. (Or 2 cowls for under $20!)

Here are some of the yarn specs:

  • Worsted weight (medium #4)
  • 219 yds/100g hank
  • 100% eco-wool
  • Recommended hook: I-K
  • Hand wash + dry flat
  • Comes in a hank
    • You can wind it by hand, but a ball-winder + swift will make your life 10x easier! (These are both pretty inexpensive, and the swift is actually on sale right now!)

Pretty shell stitch texture up close!

The Sunny Hills Cowl – Notes

This cowl is worked flat, repeating 2 rows until desired height, then seamed together to create a tube. It’s a simple pattern that creates a really beautiful textured fabric, looking a lot more complicated than it actually is. This cowl took me about 4 hours to complete, start to finish.

You can repeat rows 2 & 3 until reaching your desired cowl height and you could even order 2 different colors and alternate colors each row.

You can adjust the width/circumference by adding or subtracting from the foundation chain in multiples of 6, then following pattern as written.

The Ch 3 at the beginning of Row 2 counts as a double crochet stitch, but the Ch 1 at the beginning of Row 1 and 3 does not count as a stitch.

Materials

Gauge

Stitch gauge: 4 pattern reps = approx. 6″

Row gauge: 10 rows = approx. 4″

For gauge swatch, ch 26, then follow pattern instructions until you have 10 rows. Your swatch should measure approx. 6” wide x 4” tall.

Final Measurements

Width (laying flat): 13.5″

Circumference: 27″

Height: 11″

Abbreviations

Ch: Chain

Dc: Double crochet

Rep: Repeat

Sc: Single crochet

Sk: Skip

Shell: Work 5 double crochet into designated stitch

Pattern

Ch 110.

Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from hook, *sk next 2 ch, Shell in next ch, sk next 2 ch, sc in next ch; rep from * to end of row, turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 2 dc in same sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk next 2 dc, *Shell in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc, sk next 2 dc; rep from * to end of row, place 3 dc in final sc, turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, sc in first dc, *sk next 2 dc, Shell in next sc, sk next 2 dc, sc in next dc; rep from * to end of row, turn.

Rep Rows 2 & 3 until desired cowl height. Sample shown worked a total of 28 rows (approx. 11″ in height).

You will be alternating sc and Shells, working sc into the center of the Shell from the previous row, and working all Shells into the sc from previous row.

Cut yarn, leaving long tail for seaming the cowl closed.

This is what your work should look like once you reach your desired height, before folding it into a tube.

Finishing

To seam cowl, line up the 2 straight edges to form a tube. Using the long tail, whip stitch your cowl closed, keeping the rows properly aligned as you do so. Cut yarn, weave ends.

Whip stitching the cowl closed. You can see that the seam is pretty well-hidden!
This is what the seam looks like once the cowl is finished.
