About

One thing I really love about this bag is the fact that it has the wooden rings incorporated to give it a more store-bought look, and less of a homemade look. I find that when other elements are added to crochet pieces, ie. straps, wooden rings, buckles, buttons, zippers, hardware, fabric, etc., that the entire project looks elevated. For some reason, used to shy away from patterns that incorporated other elements because I saw it as extra step, something new to learn, or something new I had to buy. But now.. I am trying my HARDEST to incorporate these elements for those exact reasons. I now WANT the extra step, something new I can learn, and new products I can try out. I’ve already got loads of patterns that are 100% yarn, either completely crocheted or completely knit, but none (yet) have other elements involved. At this point in my pattern-designing-venture, I’m looking for something new, something fun that I can add to my crochet project and really bump up the WOW factor. You know? So, that’s why I included these rings, and I think it was one of my best ideas yet!

I made this bag in May of 2019 after wanting a cute puff stitch bag to take to the beach. This is a bag that I use myself. I have one bag pattern already, the Calypso Carry All, but the one thing I wanted to add to this next bag were the wooden rings where the straps are attached. I love the way it it turned out! I named this bag the Sunburst Beach Bag because this was the first word that came to my mind when I was crocheting the puff stitches for the body of the bag. Something about this bag makes me think sunshine. What would you wear it with? I would (and do!) wear mine with a long, colourful summer dress, or any summer outfit! I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, but you could of course use any yarn you like (preferably cotton, but you do you)! You could try We Are Knitters, Wool and the Gang, Lily Sugar ‘N Cream, another cotton from Lion Brand (there are a lot of good ones), Knit Picks, whatever you like! This is a really great pattern to follow if you make things for spring or summer markets. I think people will be impressed when they see your crochet booth with bags like this and the Calypso! As always, feel free to make any of my patterns for market stock – I’m happy to play a tiny part in your market adventures!

If you’re a fan of Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton, I also used it for these 4 patterns as well:

Construction

The bottom of this bag is crocheted in a spiral to hide any seams, and then the next section changes to joined rounds, but the last puff of each round is worked over the seam in order to make it look seamless. You can make the bag larger or smaller simply by creating more or less increase rounds. I think for my next one, I would make this bag again with 2-tone colour block!

As usual, the pattern is written in US Crochet Terms. You’ll need to know how to ch, sl st, hdc, and how to make a puff stitch (but don’t worry – I will show you exactly how to make it). It’s an easy level pattern and you’re gonna love it!

Yarn

I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton for this project. I chose the colour ecru, and used just over 4 skeins for the entire project, so I used 4 full skeins and just broke into the 5th. Cotton will work best for this type of project, but feel free to experiment for yourself! LB 24/7 Cotton is available in so many colours, you’ll definitely find something that suits you! I wrote an entire blog post about why I love this yarn so much, but I won’t bore you with all the details – you can read here about it if you like. It’s 100% cotton, and chainette style so your hook won’t split the yarn like it would in other yarns where the plies twist.
