About

I’ve always loved 90’s fashion. There are so many bits and pieces I like to pull from this clothing era, from fuzzy sweaters to plaid pants to turtlenecks. When I first came across Caron Latte Cakes yarn, I was instantly reminded of the fuzzy sweaters frequently worn by Rachel Green in the show Friends.

This chic winter sweater is crocheted with a textured novelty yarn to produce a fuzzy sweater reminiscent of those especially popular in the 90’s and early 2000’s. This budget-friendly yarn produces a beautiful sweater with an unexpected texture that can’t be achieved with regular yarn.

The Fuzzy Raglan is worked seamlessly from the top-down with raglan sleeves and afterthought short-row shaping at the back-neck for a more tailored fit. Plus, a nice bonus – this textured yarn hides the back-seam of your sweater for a clean, store-bought look.

Though it can be worn on any occasion, the Fuzzy Raglan was designed with the holidays in mind. Whether you’re headed to a holiday dinner or a New Year’s Eve party, this sweater is sure to become one of your favourite cool-weather staples.

Caron Latte Cakes is available exclusively at Michaels Stores, and you will probably be able to make the whole thing for around $15 if the yarn is on sale. It’s a pretty quick project – you can make this whole sweater in just a few days no matter the size!

Here are five ways to style your Fuzzy Raglan sweater:

1. Slightly front-tucked into high-waisted jeans with heel booties

2. Slightly tucked into mini skirt with leggings (I like this look, channeling my inner Rachel Green)

3. Under overalls/under an overall dress

4. Made with short sleeves and cropped, worn with a flowy maxi skirt

5. Long sleeves, cropped, worn over flowy maxi dress

I also made a version with short sleeves!

Getting Started: the Fuzzy Raglan

Yarn: Heavy Worsted/Bulky—Caron Latte Cakes* in Grey Velvet

  • 58% acrylic, 42% nylon
  • 530 yds [485 m] per 8.8-oz [250-g] skein
  • Find this yarn on yarnspirations.com or visit yarnsub.com to find comparable substitutes.

Yardage: 2 (2, 3, 3, 3) (3, 4, 4, 4) cakes of Caron Latte Cakes, or

  • 870 (945, 1085, 1180, 1325) (1450, 1600, 1735, 1785) yds
  • 796 (865, 993, 1079, 1212) (1326, 1464, 1587, 1633) m

Caron Latte Cakes is labeled as a category #5, bulky weight yarn but works up more like a category #4, heavy worsted weight yarn. Substitute Caron Latte Cakes with any similar category 4 (worsted or heavy worsted) or category 5 (bulky) yarn that matches gauge.

Hook: Size U.S. I/9 (5.5 mm) or size needed to obtain gauge

Notions: Tapestry needle

Yarn

This yarn really is the star of the show. I would strongly recommend using this yarn or a similarly “hairy” eyelash-type yarn. Other textured yarns will work as well, such as boucle yarns. You could also try holding a fingering weight double with an eyelash yarn. Any yarn can be used to work this sweater but please be aware that if you use a smooth yarn, the seam will be slightly noticeable, and the short rows that are added at the end will be more noticeable.

The yarn says it’s a bulky weight, but I find it to be closer to a worsted, so feel free to test out both weights in a gauge swatch and see which fabric you like best.

*Note that self-striping colourways may result in unwanted colour pooling at the back seam since we join + turn each round. Also note that different dye lots of this yarn vary drastically so make sure to double check the dye lots!
