About

This gorgeous multi-coloured faded wrap is made from a simple 2-row repeat, and uses just single crochets! The only technique you may not be familiar with is how to work the colour changes, but I promise – once you see how easy it is to do one row, it’s a breeze.

Typical “fades” work the colour changes a bit differently than I did in this pattern. Usually, an old colour will transition to a new colour over many rows, fading slowly from old colour to new.

Here, what I’ve done is work each colour-change section by working simply alternating A, B, A, B, A, B, etc, rather than A, A, A, A, B, A, A, A, B, B, A, A, B, A, B, B, A, B, B, B, A, B, B, B, B or something like that which would gradually fade the colours from old to new.

This is much simpler way to achieve a unique colour transition and it makes it a really easy pattern to work while you’re watching TV and you don’t have to pay that close of attention to your counting.

Materials

  • Size E/4 (3.5 mm) crochet hook
  • 8 balls of WeCrochet Palette Fingering (100% wool) in 5 different colours:
    • Colour A: Merlot Heather  (1 ball)
    • Colour B: Brown Sugar (1 ball)
    • Colour C: Serpentine (2 balls)
    • Colour D: Turmeric (2 balls)
    • Colour E: Coriander Heather (2 balls)
  • Read my Palette yarn review here!
  • Tapestry needle

Abbreviations

  • ch: chain
  • rep: repeat
  • sc: single crochet
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Gauge

4″ = 24 sts x 28 rows in single crochet worked flat

Gauge is not important for this pattern, but if you want your shawl to have the same dimensions as the ones provided, you will need to match gauge. For a slightly larger shawl, you can use a larger hook and ignore the gauge given above.

Pattern Notes

  • This wrap begins at one corner and increases each row by 1 stitch until the wrap reaches your desired size
    • Here, mine starts at the brown-red and finishes with the beige.
  • Wrap is broken down into 9 sections.
  • When working a colour change, work the last stitch of your old-colour row as normal, but work the final yarn-over with the new colour. Then, proceed to work your next row with the new colour while carrying the old colour so that when you finish this row, you can resume using the old colour.
  • During the 2-colour sections, make sure your carried yarn is not too tight. Give your work a stretch before finishing a row so that these 2-colour sections will have a similar stretch as your 1-colour sections. Otherwise, if these 2-colour sections are too stiff, your wrap will not block out as nicely.
  • For the entirety of this wrap, you will increase each row by 1 st by working 2 sc into the first st of the row on all even rows, and working 2 sc into the last st of the row on all odd rows.
  • The row number and final stitch count for that row will always match. Ex) Row 16 will finish with a final stitch count of 16 sc; Row 48 will finish with 48 sc.
  • The first row of all new colours will be worked on the straight edge (the non increase-edge)

Finishing

Block your wrap so that it lays flat. This will fix any buckling or curling of edges! Wet-blocking will probably give you the best results. These are my favourite blocking mats.
